Female Battering is No Joke
Some persons believe that the injuries suffered by male victims of domestic violence are inconsequential or even a cause for humor. But a recent study by Denise Hines, PhD and Emily Douglas, PhD shatter those stereotypes.
An analysis of 302 men battered by their female partners in the previous year found over three-quarters of the men had sustained physical injuries as a result of the battering:
- Minor – 77.5%
- Severe – 35.1%
- Minor or Severe – 78.5%
In addition, 23.5% of the men in the study had been diagnosed with a mental illness such as:
- Depressive disorder – 64.8% of the men with mental illness
Anxiety disorder – 47.9%
ADHD – 25.4%
Bipolar – 16.9%
Other: PTSD – 12.7%
Alcoholism/substance abuse – 11.3%
Borderline personality disorder – 4.2%
Schizophrenia – 4.2%
For 41% of men, the mental illness had started since being in the current relationship.
Clearly, the effects of female battering are neither inconsequential or funny.
