Domestic violence shelters are facing a crisis of epic proportions. As the number of victims of partner violence continues to fall, shelters are searching for ways to re-tool their programs to maintain their relevance.

La Casa abuse shelter in Las Cruces, NM is now offering money management classes under the rubric of “financial empowerment.”

Gina Orona-Ruiz, executive director of La Casa, Inc., left, Don Harlow, La Casa board president and Dawna Vince, an agent with Allstate Insurance, pose Monday at the domestic violence shelter with a symbolic check.

Vince presented the money to La Casa to help fund its Financial Empowerment Curriculum, which teaches clients how to manage money and become financially independent, said Orona-Ruiz. Vince is a “big supporter” of the Allstate Foundation after her 15-year-old niece, Ashley Wax, was murdered by her boyfriend, she said.
