DV Alarmists Get Juiced in Orlando, Fla.
Since the mid-1980s, domestic violence crime rates have been on the decline across the United States. But in Orlando, Fla., the community is gearing up to launch an “extreme domestic-violence intervention.”
Exactly what is an “extreme” DV program? Well, here goes: The program ”would initially provide training to emergency responders – including law-enforcement officers, fire fighters and medical workers – as well as teachers and community leaders. Eventually, students, parents, civic groups and even business men and women would be trained on how to recognize the warning signs of violence and what to do about them.”
But how do we know that things have gotten out of hand in Orlando? Get ready for this: “Overall, the data released Monday showed a 12.5 percent increase from 2008 to 2009 in domestic violence calls to law enforcement at the same time other crime was decreasing in Orange County.”
How many of those calls revealed evidence of actual violence? How many resulted in an arrest? Or a conviction? The truth is, a 12% increase in the number of requests for police assistance is like saying we have an epidemic of emergencies because of a spike in the number of 911 calls.
But rest assured: Having the DV boogeyman to slay provides good fodder for sympathetic media coverage, and that, of course, makes for a favorable funding climate.
