Utah: Excellent Article on New Approaches to Treating DV

For years, Batterer Intervention Programs (BIPs) have the been the dirty little secret of the domestic violence industry.

Everone knew they didn’t work to reduce partner violence. But at least the men were forced to endure hours of group shaming, dogmatic slogans, and feminist indoctrination.

Fed up with these ineffective programs, mental health professionals around the country are now working to develop innovative approaches that recognize the existence of female-initiated violence and mutual abuse. One such program is called Circles of Peace.

The Salt Lake Tribune ran a feature article about Circles of Peace, and even began the story with an account of a (gasp!) female batterer:

“She would yell, swear and call him names every time they fought.

He would respond calmly, sometimes with sarcasm, which only made her more angry. Periodically during their 20 years together, she reacted by hitting him. “

This is one of the best articles on this topic we’ve seen in the mainstream media, and we encourage Abusegate readers to commend the reporter, Brooke Adams: brooke@sltrib.com
