Gender-Neutral Power and Control Wheel Now Available

One of the brainchilds of the Duluth model is what’s called the Power and Control Wheel. The Wheel is a tool to highlight partners’ power dynamics that can underlie domestic violence.

Unfortunately, the Duluth Power and Control Wheel portrays the man as the aggressor and the woman as the victim, using sex-biased terms like “male privilege,” “using visitation to harass her,” etc.

Now, a gender-neutral Power and Control Wheel is available, courtesy of Stop Abusive and Violent Environments (SAVE). The Wheel can be downloaded here: http://www.saveservices.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/PowerandControlWheel.pdf

  1. About time. The Duluth Wheel is useful in properly addressing SOME male against female DV unfortunately it has been held up as the model for ALL DV pretty much leaving out any DV that doesn’t fit that. This is why we have the situation now in which people literally define it as male against female which even if you go by the gender binary (meaning there are only two genders male/female) that leaves out 3 other forms of DV.

I much prefer this wheel (but I am formally predicting now that there will be feminists who will complain about this wheel on the grounds that “erases” male against female violence).
